Summertime

itunes: Corinne Bailey Rae, Corinne Bailey Rae (2006)

Summertime and the livin is easy
Fish are jumpin and the cotton is high
Oh your daddys rich and your ma is good lookin
So hush little baby, dont you cry
One of these mornings
Youre goin to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take the sky
But till that morning
Theres a nothin can harm you
With daddy and mammy standin by
- DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin (1935)

This is one of my favourite jazz standards. A couple of simple words, yet able to bring out the laid-back feeling of summer. Here in Singapore, it's not easy to appreciate fully the beauty of summer cos it is hot and humid all year round. Looking at the sky above, clusters of bright white clouds with the solid blue background, seems palpable so much so one can simply reach out, hold it in both hands and feel its existence.....
